Qiana Johnson, aka Yonni Thompson as she is known in the natural hair industry, started braiding at the age of 12 in her hometown of Newark, NJ. She graduated cosmetology school in 1998 as a cosmetologist, and for the next 12 years worked in African braiding salons, blow dry bars, barber shops, and chemical service salons (relaxers and coloring), gathering information and conducting research on the best practices for hair, particularly black hair. Although she had a cosmetology license, she gravitated to natural hair styling after mastering most cosmetology school techniques. Natural hair styling wasn’t taught cosmetology school in the 90’s. She began teaching dreadlocks, to her fellow cosmetology school classmates after her teacher saw how well she could execute starter twists. She has trained nearly 700 locticians to date in every major city in the U. S.!
